8. Nazi Zombies Are Back
As someone who has never been a fan of the Zombie modes in Call of Duty, the announcement that Nazi Zombies are back fell flat for me. Only one image was teased, as no details were given, but major changes would have to be made to make the mode interesting again. Regardless of my enthusiasm, it further proves that Zombies will be a yearly staple now that both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have included it.
9. Taking Inspiration from Battlefield
The major multiplayer announcement was a new mode called War. This “narrative-driven” mode looks to add an extra oomph to the action compared to playing random matches, and will focus on the Axis vs. Allies battle. Details are scarce, but it sounds a lot like Battlefield 1’s Operations mode. It’s good to see more developers using asymmetric multiplayer to freshen things up, and there are a lot of possible twists that Call of Duty can put on the mode in order to make it their own.
10. Big Changes
In addition to the reveal stream, Sledgehammer Games also gave several interviews that revealed new tidbits about the upcoming shooter. The most interesting news came from a Polygon feature, where Schofield revealed that auto-regeneration is gone. This is exciting for several reasons, with the main one being that it’s finally something different from Call of Duty. Despite featuring solid gunplay, the series has gotten repetitive over the years, and changes will have to be made for it to feel fresh. This is a step in the right direction, and it gives me a lot of hope going forward.
