Prepare to Enter the Blood Dungeon
Messhof has officially announced its upcoming title, Blood Dungeon, during the Day of the Devs: Summer Game Fest Edition showcase. The studio is known for its cult hit title, Nidhogg, and now the team is going back to what they do best with Blood Dungeon. It’s a 2D fast-paced movement-driven action roguelike set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in late Summer 2026.
Additionally, you do not have to wait to try out the game. A demo is already available on Steam ahead of the Next Fest. You can also get a hands-on experience at the Summer Game Fest: Play Days.
Blood Dungeon is about having good control over your character and moving quickly. It encourages players to kite enemies, chain parkour maneuvers, and fight through dangerous dungeons. The gritty pixel art style makes it visually striking as well, keeping things interesting with the survival-focused gameplay loop.
Interestingly, the project started as a small passion experiment. Co-founder Mark Essen shared that it began as a casual GameMaker sketch, something he worked on during spare moments, even creating animations on a modest tablet while on the go. That low-pressure development approach helped shape the game’s design, keeping it focused and fun.
At its core, Blood Dungeon is about staying alive and getting better. You have to navigate through areas, collect blood and power-ups, and bring back bones that you can use to buy things in the Bone Shop to make your character stronger. When you complete quests, you can unlock new arenas, upgrades, and ways to customize your character.
With its roots in classic Messhof design and a clear emphasis on skill-based movement, Blood Dungeon looks like a compelling return for the studio. So, make sure to keep an eye out, or dive into the demo right now.
