The Best Characters in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Ranked

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Character Feature

While previous Lego video games typically allowed for many, many different playable characters, Legacy of the Dark Knight focuses on seven playable characters: Batman, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Talia Al Ghul. While each of these characters shares basic hand-to-hand combat skills, gliding, grappling hook, and vehicular abilities, they also have unique abilities that set them apart. As each of them plays slightly differently, I found myself favoring one over the other when it comes to the characters.

The following ranking is a subjective list based on which characters I found the most fun to play as. Keep in mind that the characters all play relatively similarly, so you may find yourself preferring one over another for whatever reason. For the most part, the characters are all enjoyable in their own ways, depending on how you like to approach things.

7. Catwoman

Apologies to all the Catwoman fans out there, but someone had to be last. Her unique abilities include a whip and summoning cat(s). What primarily made me rate her so low was her puzzles; I found them the least enjoyable out of the bunch, but that doesn’t mean they are bad. Catwoman’s combat was fine, and her role in the game was also done well; she just didn’t stand out positively amongst a strong cast of notable characters.

6. Nightwing

After playing as Robin for a while, Nightwing just felt a bit redundant for me. I enjoy his character design more than Robin’s, but I just found myself switching off him more than I did the other characters. His unique abilities add to Robin’s “birdarang” to become an “electrorang”, and his cable launcher adds electricity. These do ultimately make a difference in terms of puzzle-solving, but by that point, it felt more like an upgraded ability in combat than a different character.

5. Batgirl

While Batgirl’s combat gameplay doesn’t stand out until some upgrades, her unique ability of a drone introduces unique puzzle and traversal elements. Her “hackarang” is her other unique ability, though the drone is much more interesting. Being able to create your own grappling locations is something truly unique to Batgirl, making her a bit more interesting in that aspect.

4. Talia Al Ghul

Typically, I find that characters or abilities you get later in the game go by the wayside the most. Talia Al Ghul is a bit different from that because of the fact that she is different. After a few characters who play similarly, it was nice to experience some different abilities. Her unique abilities include a ninja dish as well as a blow dart, a nice break from the mold the Batfamily members use.

3. Robin

I didn’t expect myself to enjoy playing as Robin as much as I did. For the most part, Robin plays pretty standard with a “birdarang” and a cable launcher that can attach to enemies or the environment. What stood out to me was his introduction portion in the game and story. Robin had, for me, the most enjoyable introduction mission out of all the characters. It blended the story with the character tutorial the best without holding your hand too much while providing satisfying combat and narrative.

2. Batman

The Dark Knight himself. As the character you’ll play as the most throughout the story, it is no surprise that the Dark Knight himself is this high. Batman’s unique abilities include his batarang and batclaw, which are pretty standard affairs. He also has additional puzzle-solving abilities, such as the explosive gel to break walls. Given that he is the main playable character, Batman has the most costumes and vehicles available, which is another reason why he’s up here.

1. Jim Gordon

This one came as a surprise to me. I had no reason to think that Jim Gordon would be my favorite character to play as, but here we are. Maybe it was the fact that he is the first character you gain access to aside from Batman, but I’d like to think not. Gordon’s unique abilities include a foam sprayer and a rebound launcher. The foam sprayer immobilizes enemies and machines. The rebound launcher might be why Gordon is my favorite character to play as. This gun launches a rubber projectile that bounces between enemies and the environment, breaking everything in its path. There is nothing more satisfying to me within the game than clearing an area of bricks in a shot or two.
