JBL Live 780NC Wireless Headset Review
If you’ve read any of my headset reviews before, you know I’m a big believer in first impressions. To me, they matter. From the packaging and presentation to the moment you pick up the headset for the first time, I want that sucker to make a strong impression. Fortunately, the JBL Live 780NC wireless headset makes a positive first impression and gets most things right out of the box.
Sure, there is nothing fancy about the packaging or contents, but when you first grab the headphones, they do look and feel great. They are lightweight yet sturdy, with a clean, modern design. They look a little more premium than their price tag might suggest. They’re comfortable right away thanks to the soft earcups, and the overall design manages to be stylish without feeling bulky. Setup is simple, too. Pairing with a phone or PC takes only a few seconds, and the JBL Headphones app walks you through the basics without requiring you to create an account.
So far, so good.
My only immediate disappointment was the included carrying case, or rather, the lack of a proper one. Sure, JBL includes a soft pouch that protects against scratches, but it doesn’t offer much protection if you’re tossing the headphones into a backpack or suitcase. For a product designed to travel, a hard-shell case would have been a welcome addition. I recently reviewed the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro 2, and their hard case is outstanding, so naturally, this cloth case doesn’t quite cut it.
Built for Long Sessions
First impressions matter, but comfort matters even more. Especially when you’re spending hours grinding through your favourite RPG, listening to Spotify, or just binge-watching your favourite shows. Thankfully, the Live 780NC is comfortable right out of the box.
The earcups feature soft leatherette padding, while the adjustable headband sliders make it relatively easy to find a good fit. The headphones fold flat and inward for travel. The overall construction feels durable, but it’s kinda hard to tell how they’ll hold up over time at this stage. You definitely won’t get accused of looking like a helicopter pilot with these badboys on.

On the downside, I have to admit I noticed a bit of heat buildup around my ears after roughly 30 minutes of use. Granted, I tend to run hot at the best of times, but these did get a little hotter than I’d prefer. That may also be due to some mild pressure from the headband. At the end of the day, nothing about the comfort made me want to take them off. For most folks, comfort shouldn’t be an issue.
Battery Life is Simply Outstanding
Battery life is easily one of the biggest selling points here. JBL claims up to 80 hours of playback with noise cancelling disabled and around 50 hours with ANC turned on. I only charged the headset once after a good week of solid use. And even then, it wasn’t completely out of juice when I charged them. It’s genuinely impressive and easily among the best you’ll find in this class.
Even better, a quick five-minute charge provides around four hours of listening time. If you’re the type of person who constantly forgets to charge their cans, the Live 780NC is super forgiving.
Boom Boom Boom
The Live 780NC uses JBL’s Signature Sound profile and supports Hi-Res Audio through LDAC. These headphones deliver plenty of detail, with crisp highs and clear vocals when everything is working as intended.
Granted, I love me some bass, but out of the box, the bass is a little over the top. Sure, explosions hit hard, music cranks the bass and action scenes sound powerful. That said, it can be a bit much. The low end can sometimes overwhelm everything else. In games, that occasionally means dialogue and environmental details lose some clarity.

Luckily, there is an easy fix. A few minutes with the JBL Headphones app and the included EQ presets dramatically improve the balance. The “Studio” preset in particular delivers a much cleaner and more natural sound. What is really entertaining is that there is an “Extreme Bass” option if you really want to blow your ears out.
That all being said, once adjusted, the Live 780NC becomes a strong performer for both gaming and music.
Useful Gaming Features
While this isn’t marketed as a dedicated gaming headset, several features make it a solid choice for mobile or even PC gamers.
JBL Spatial Sound helps create a wider, more immersive soundstage when gaming or watching movies. That said, it won’t replace true surround sound solutions, and it doesn’t deliver the same punch I get from my Stealth Pro 2 on Xbox with Dolby Atmos. Even so, it still adds a noticeable sense of space that enhances the overall experience.
The JBL Headphones app is also solid and user-friendly. Beyond the EQ settings, it includes latency controls, customizable touch gestures, adaptive EQ, ANC controls, and Personi-Fi 3.0, which creates a personalized sound profile based on your hearing. Everything is clearly laid out and easy to understand, even for folks like me who normally avoid tweaking audio settings. I’m usually a default settings kinda guy.
A nice little feature is the Bluetooth multipoint support, which allows the headphones to stay connected to multiple devices simultaneously.
Not Completely Noise Cancelling
The Live 780NC features JBL’s True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0 system, which uses six microphones to monitor your surroundings and adjust the noise cancellation in real time.
In practice, it works well. I always have my ice machine, TV, and a window open in the house. The noise-cancelling pretty much wipes out the noise. But lawnmowers, and my dog barking come through, unfortunately. I cannot say for sure how these would hold up in a plane. Overall, the Live 780NC is merely fine for noise cancelling, just nothing outstanding.

Missing in Action
While the headset is rock solid, the accessories remain a disappointment. As I mentioned above, the included soft pouch feels like an odd compromise on an otherwise premium product. JBL also omits a charging cable, which feels a tad stingy.
Final Thoughts
The JBL Live 780NC isn’t trying to be a hardcore gaming headset. Instead, it delivers excellent battery life, good comfort, useful features, terrific sound, and a rock-solid companion app. While the noise-cancelling features could be improved and the bass-heavy default tuning rocks your socks at first, and the lackluster carrying pouch is a criticism, none of that is enough to overshadow what is otherwise a very good headset. If you’re looking for slick-looking wireless headphones that can handle gaming, music, movies, work calls, and travel without constantly needing a charge, the JBL Live 780NC is a no-brainer.
