Get a First-Hand Experience of Monarchs at Play
German indie developer MixedMoonGames has announced that its upcoming strategy title Monarchs at Play will kick off its first public playtest on April 24, 2026. Players eager to try the game early can already register through Steam. They can also check out additional early access opportunities through the game’s official Discord community.
Monarchs at Play aims to deliver a streamlined take on the classic 4X formula, condensing the experience into fast-paced sessions that can be completed in roughly one hour. Built as a turn-based strategy game, it focuses on accessibility without sacrificing depth. This makes the game appealing to both newcomers and seasoned fans of the genre.
At the core of the gameplay is a simple yet strategic mechanic: placing buildings. Players will construct their cities by carefully positioning structures to create powerful adjacency bonuses. All while optimizing resource production and expanding their influence. Success depends on smart planning and adaptability, as players compete against rival monarchs through diplomacy, trade, or direct conflict to accumulate the most Glory.
The game offers a variety of modes, including single-player, multiplayer, and unique challenge scenarios. At launch, players will have access to six distinct monarchs. Each features special abilities and exclusive buildings that shape different playstyles. With over 50 buildings available, the game provides plenty of options for crafting a personalized empire.
With its focus on shorter sessions and strategic depth, Monarchs at Play looks set to offer a fresh spin on the 4X genre. The upcoming playtest will give players an early glimpse at what MixedMoonGames has in store.
