Build an Empire in Monarchs at Play
The German indie duo MixedMoonGames has officially unveiled Monarchs at Play during the German 1UP Indie Showcase on December 11, 2025. The developers presented the project as a fresh take on the genre, combining the strategic depth of classic 4X games with the accessibility and smooth pacing of a modern board game experience.
The game challenges the traditional expectation of long, complex 4X sessions. Each match takes around one hour, encouraging players to focus on meaningful decisions instead of constant micromanagement. By streamlining its systems while preserving tactical complexity, Monarchs at Play aims to attract both experienced strategy players and newcomers to the genre.
The announcement offers the first public look at the project and clearly defines its design philosophy: simple rules supported by deep and rewarding tactical choices. Players expand their empires by placing and combining buildings, activating powerful adjacency bonuses that influence production and long-term growth. Strategic interaction remains central, giving players the freedom to trade, negotiate, or engage in conflict with rival monarchs.
Monarchs at Play supports solo play as well as multiplayer, including online co-op, allowing players to tailor the experience to their preferred playstyle. Players can choose from multiple monarchs, each featuring distinct strengths, abilities, and playstyles that shape how an empire develops.
With more than 40 unique buildings to experiment with, diverse leaders to master, and a tightly focused match structure, the game promises to deliver a complete 4X experience in a compact, accessible format.
