Witchfire Released The Reckoning Content Update as It Sold Over 500,000 Copies

Face the Reckoning in Witchfire

Witchfire, the single-player dark fantasy RPG shooter from The Astronauts, has received a major new update titled The Reckoning. Alongside this release, the studio has confirmed that the game has now surpassed 500,000 sales since entering Early Access, marking a significant milestone for the project.

The Reckoning expands Witchfire’s combat in a meaningful way by moving beyond pure gunplay. For the first time, players gain access to melee weapons, including a morgenstern, a katar, and a shield. These additions replace the basic fist with powerful alternatives, each offering distinct abilities and tactical value. Designed to flow naturally alongside firearms and magic, the new melee tools allow witch hunters to engage enemies up close without breaking the rhythm of combat.

Ranged options have also grown with the introduction of three new firearms, highlighted by a long-requested triple-barreled shotgun. One standout weapon, the Tribunal, supports an aggressive run-and-gun approach. Dashing or sliding charges upcoming shots, while fully charged, overkills trigger a devastating shock explosion. When paired with melee attacks and spells, combat now feels more fluid, flexible, and deadly.

To help players experiment with these tools, a new shooting range has been added. Featuring an interactive bestiary, it allows players to test builds and loadouts against enemies they have already defeated before heading back into dangerous expeditions.

The update also brings quality of life improvements. Witchfire is now fully verified on Steam Deck and includes new accessibility options such as adjustable font sizes and an arachnophobia filter. A spider-themed calamity joins the list of cursed events, extraction mechanics have been reworked, and two new gameplay modifiers raise the challenge for veteran players. Full details are available in the official patch notes.
