Dragon Age: Veilguard Excites Me for the Next Mass Effect
After a challenging decade marked by mixed-to-negative receptions for their last two major releases, BioWare has finally recaptured the magic that defined its classic RPGs. Dragon Age: Veilguard embodies the core qualities that once established this studio as a powerhouse in the genre. Mass Effect: Andromeda’s shortcomings left fans uncertain about the franchise’s future, but with Veilguard’s success, there’s new hope for what BioWare might bring to their next Mass Effect installment. Here are five reasons why this game excites me for what’s next.
Narrative Depth and Choices
BioWare tells incredible stories that feature a rich cast of interesting characters. At the center of their tales are choices that alter your relationship with each companion and impact the path to your objective. This leads to a level of freedom as your avatar directly impacts the narrative. Decisions are often difficult to make as the lasting effects are not always immediately clear. Although present in Andromeda, choices lacked meaningful consequences that reduced the tension and weight that fans expected. As this element has been addressed in Veilguard, this fills me with hope for the next Mass Effect.
World-Building
Developers have created one of the most richly developed universes in gaming with Mass Effect. Each race feels distinct, with backgrounds that include detailed political and societal nuances, making every interaction feel meaningful. Mass Effect: Andromeda missed the mark here, relying on established races without introducing new species that could have deepened the story and expanded the lore. Veilguard avoids these pitfalls, offering a range of compelling new characters alongside some familiar faces, which helps extend the world of the series. This enriches the universe, making it more immersive and rewarding to explore.
Cinematic Missions
Veilguard manages to balance linear missions with semi-open world sections. An issue with Andromeda was the lack of tailored, story-rich missions and this is clearly addressed in BioWare’s latest release. Missions included a cinematic flair and variety which can often be overlooked in an open setting. However, they also include semi-open areas for you to explore, discover quests and learn the lore of the land. The game’s formula needs to carry over to the next Mass Effect release to avoid the issues that plagued the last entry in the franchise.
Improved Combat and Mechanics
One of the most divisive aspects of Veilguard is the complete overhaul of the combat system. While many love the more action-orientated approach, others feel that its shift away from its roots hinders the experience. One aspect that shines is the fluidity of movement and the apply and detonate combinations that you can initiate with your companions. Introducing this dynamic approach to teamwork could elevate the gunplay in the next Mass Effect.
Visuals and Atmosphere:
Another aspect of Dragon Age that has split fans is the new art direction. Stepping away from realistic designs for over-characterized aesthetics was a bold move. While it took time for me to accept the decision, it’s difficult to argue with the visuals as a whole. Each area brims with personality, establishing distinct regions that offer a plethora of memorable moments. The cinematography is excellent and aids the narrative through its contemporary approach to cutscenes. Already confirmed to maintain its photo-realistic art style, I hope that Mass Effect takes inspiration from the direction used in Veilguarding to support its cinematic storytelling.
Dragon Age: Veilguard surpassed my expectations and firmly places BioWare back in the conversation as one of the best developers of RPG adventures. Although we’re probably a long way off the next Mass Effect game, the fact that Dragon Age evolves the franchise and addresses issues that enshrouded their previous titles fills me with hope for what the team has in store for us.
