The Biggest Sensations of EMEA Masters Summer 2023

The summer edition of EMEA Masters 2023 was definitely great not only in terms of emotions but also in terms of sensations. At the start of the PG Nationals summer split, Dsyre Esports was perceived as a formation that could achieve something, but it will be very difficult for it to advance to the EMEA Masters. The team consisted of players who already had experience in the EMEA Regional League scene but without success.

Greek top laner Panagiotis “Empyros” Tantis has won the Greek Legends League Championship. Ukrainian Khaled “XoNix” Noman had already won the Italian league championship and was also in the top ranks of the Ukrainian-Russian league. And the Turks Enes “Rhilech” Uçan and Berat “Aetinoth” Tıknazoğlu only played in the academies of their region.

Finally, apart from Macko Esports, Atleta Esports with Mateusz “Kikis” Szkudlarek and Sebastian “Sebekx” Smejkal played in the Italian league. Kikis himself mentioned in an interview with us that he did not see any threat in the other teams. In addition, Cyberground invested a squad with three Turks, one of whom was Fatihcan “Fatihcan” Demir. These four teams made it to the playoffs, although in an order that might have surprised fans.

Dsyre took second place, ahead of Atleta by one point. There was nothing left to collect in the knockout phase. DSYR won the match to advance to the final and the EMEA Masters 3-0 against ATE. The individual games were evenly matched, but in key moments the Norwegian supporter Alf-Kristian “Nash” Sund, playing Rell, showed off brilliant moves. However, the formation did not have much of a chance against Macko.

At the EMEA Masters, in the play-in phase, Dsyre was in a quite strong group with the runners-up of the Balkan and Arab leagues, as well as the champion of Greece. XoNix and company finished the first day with a 1-2 record, but they rebounded on the second day of the competition, leading to a playoff for advancement. In this one, the PG Nationals defeated Nigma Galaxy after a long fight. The real sensation occurred in the play-off for promotion to the main stage.

In it, the Italian team faced the strong Turkish FUT Esports and won sensationally 2:1. Although the first map was a disaster in favour of FUT, the Ukrainian midfielder Ahri showed his great performance in the next two maps and led the team to victory. Italian fans can also remember the main event positively. Dsyre was included in a very strong group, but still took third place, crushing AliorBank Team twice in less than 26 minutes.

Macko Esports

For many people, such a great performance by Macko Esports may seem like a huge sensation. Indeed, the advancement of the Italian team to the semi-finals of the EMEA Masters is a historic event. However, to fully understand the phenomenon of this team, we need to go back to the beginning of the year. This season, MCK invested in a squad with a lot of experience and it finally exploded.

The pillar of the organization was Vittorio “Click” Massolo, who had already spent three splits there and each time he advanced to the EU Masters. This season, he co-created the bottom lane with Teodor “Vzz” Cholakov, a former player of, among others, Zero Tenacity, ŠAIM SE SuppUp and Random 5. The Bulgarian appeared on EM more than once with each of these teams. Casper “Cboi” Bo Simonsen is also a veteran of this tournament. The Danish jungler played on EM four times in a row before joining Macko. The lineup was completed by slightly less battle-experienced Markus “ACD” Käpp and Sixten “Six10” Hull.

All these players, apart from Six10, have previously played in so many EM editions that players from other teams in the EMEA Regional Leagues can only envy them. However, they only reached the quarterfinals of the tournament and were most often eliminated in the group stage or in the play-ins. This time they wanted to achieve something more together and they succeeded. Already in spring, Macko surprised everyone by beating Aegis twice, FUT Esports twice and Movistar Riders once in the group. However, later came the quarterfinals against SK Gaming Prime and the Italian team was eliminated immediately, losing 0:3.

MCK’s performance during the summer edition of EMEA Masters was even better. During the tournament, Vzz and company showed that it is worth narrowing down their pool of characters and playing the same heroes all the time. This brought results, because MCK in set B easily beat Anorthosis Famagusta Esports and Nativz. However, the most impressive were their triumphs with Karmine Corp. While the first one was caused by KC’s stupid mistakes, in the second one Macko looked great from the very beginning. ACD’s Gangplank performances were downright hits.

In the draw for the quarterfinals, the representatives of PG Nationals were lucky enough to play against the Portuguese GTZ Esports. Macko defeated their opponents 3-0, playing practically the same heroes in each part of the series. Vzz had three Xayah appearances and ACD had three Rumble appearances. However, Cboi, Six10 and Click played two times in a row: Maokai, Ahri and Alistar. This is how the Italian formation achieved historic success at EM, advancing to the semi-finals.
