Mass Effect Will Continue
Well, I have egg on my face. I feel like I’ve been calling a Silent Hill announcement tonight for months. I assumed they’d save the announcement of the return of one of horror’s most critically acclaimed and beloved franchises for the end of The Game Award’s, only to be shocked to see a Galaxy and be proven immediately wrong.
Still, a new Mass Effect game is plenty interesting, too. The series has drawn critical acclaim and rabid fan devotion, with a remaster of the original trilogy announced for 2021. The latest game, Andromeda, may not have struck a chord with fans in the same way as the original games did, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be chomping at the bit to get their hands on it. After all, the last universally adored Silent Hill game was Silent Hill 3, all the way back in 2003, but that doesn’t mean that fans weren’t excited for Silent Hills or hopeful for a reboot to be announced tonight. (Sidenote, I am still hung up on this. I will not recover. I am DISTRAUGHT.)
Details are thin on the ground about the new game, and there’s no gameplay to speak of. The bulk of the trailer is a slow zoom across a galaxy before showing an asari on a snowy planet. Exciting? Absolutely – but not much to go on. It’s likely that Bioware will stick with what works, with a focus on exploration and relationships as your character travels to various planets in an effort to combat an alien threat – but for old fans and newcomers, that’s a lot to look forward to.
