A New Ad that Demonstrates the Immersive Features of the New PS5 Console was Just Released
Leading up to the launch of the PS5, Sony has been teasing us with peeks of the new features and technology of the next gen console. Today, they released an ad that showcases the new immersive features, including 3D audio, haptic feedback, and adaptive trigger buttons. The ad is posted below. You are going to want to watch it with the sound up to get a good experience of the 3D audio featured.
The 3D audio really stands out in this ad. You can hear sounds from all directions and can get a sense of where the sounds are coming from. I can’t wait to see this integrated into a game. It really is amn immersive experience. Although, I am a little worried that it might make some games too scary for me. Imagine hearing a snarling creature sneak up behind you as you play a game at night all alone!
Watching the ad above unfortunately does not give us a good sense of the haptic features PS5 will have. However, because the haptic feedback will be limited to the controller, like in previous console generations, presumably it will be similar to what we have experienced in the past. Perhaps with a wider range of vibrations and movements. One feature that is mentioned is that the haptic feedback can be used to tell us which direction an attack is coming from.
An interesting addition, however, is adaptive controller triggers. The news release accompanying the video says: “Closing out the spot – as the central character draws her bow – the tension of her bowstring is a sensation you’ll also feel, made possible through the DualSense wireless controller’s adaptive triggers.”
This could be game changing! As characters struggle in game, perhaps we will also struggle to control them. It might become physically harder to move or pull our trigger if our character is weak. Although the quote doesn’t say anything about the joy sticks also having an adaptive control, I think this would be a big missed opportunity if they do not.
An example of how the adaptive triggers are said to be used is to simulate a weapon jam. If your weapon becomes jammed, your trigger button will also become jammed until you repair you weapon. And the triggers will simulate kick back after firing by combining the adaptive triggers with haptic feedback.
