The PS5’s Rest Mode Can Use Less Power Than the PS4’s Rest Mode

The PS5 Aims to Be Eco-Friendly

Sony announced on Sunday that it was joining an environmental United Nations alliance, Playing for the Planet, alongside other game companies such as Microsoft and Ubisoft. In a statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan mentioned that Sony’s “next generation PlayStation console” (presumably called “PS5”) can use less power in rest mode than the PS4 does.

“I am also very pleased to announce the next generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W),” Ryan said. “If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes.”

Also, Sony plans to use energy efficient technology and the company promised to “assess and report their carbon footprint and to educate and inspire the gaming community to take action on climate change.”
