The Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is one of Razer’s latest offerings in its wired headphones line. For myself, headphones are generally a hit or miss, with a few must-haves that I have come to expect from them. Specifically, sound quality and comfort are at the top of that list, with the microphone and ease of connectivity coming in thereafter.

Getting right into the headphones, the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition features Razer’s classic green and black aesthetic. Somewhat different from other headphones in this price range ($100 USD), these headphones come with an aluminum frame which gives it some sturdiness while remaining lightweight. The 50mm drivers are also encased in soft cloth and leatherette, with a cooling gel layer and soft memory foam within.

Put simply, the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition headphones are comfortable for me. With a relatively large-sized head, comfort has generally been an issue for me when it comes to headphones. Whether past headphones do not fully reach my ears or are too tight on my ears, a variety of comfort issues have arisen that the Kraken has yet to display. Furthermore, I never felt compelled to remove the headphones due to discomfort after relatively long periods of time.

Moving on to sound quality, the 50mm drivers with its THX Spatial Audio provide an overall robust listening experience. While they do not provide that studio-quality sound you find in professional headphones, they more than do what they need to for gaming purposes. In addition, bass controls, volume controls, and the ability to balance the game and chat volume make the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition a versatile headphone.

Multi-functional!

Lastly, the microphone quality on the headphones was good as well, providing clear communications though picking up a bit more background noise than I would have liked. For some additional information on the headphones, I liked that the wires on the headphone were of the braided variety and that the microphone itself can retract into the left speaker when not in use. The headphones also work with the PS4 and at least has an audio function when connected to devices with an auxiliary port.

For its price point, the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is an overall solid pair of headphones that is versatile and comfortable. While the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition is obviously not the greatest pair of headphones ever manufactured, it easily does what it needs to in terms of audio quality, chat, and comfort. The overall ease of setup, robust feeling design, and retractable microphone are also worthy additions to a quality headphone.
