Apparently, the Change Was a Roll of the DICE
Battlefield V launched to some controversy last month, due to various issues. And in the effort to appease new players, the developer decreased the time it takes to kill in multiplayer playlists. This caused a backlash from the core community, who believe the new TTK value hampered the experience.
On Reddit, DICE posted an update on the game but preceded with an apology: “On behalf of the Battlefield team: I’d like to apologize for the silence over the past couple of days on the TTK topic. We’ve seen it’s been a big talking point and causing a divide in the community, which was never our intention. We have been listening closely to what you’ve all been saying.” The post then listed its temporary solution to the decreased time to kill. In order to serve everyone, Battlefield V received a “Core” playlist that would include maps with the original TTK values. Yet another move that failed to appease long-time fans.
Eventually, due to the general displeasure with the state of the game, DICE backpedaled on their changes altogether.
“Clearly we didn’t get it right,” DICE said about the TTK. “Veteran players didn’t ask for the change, but as game developers, we took it upon ourselves to make those changes based on extensive data and deliberation. It truthfully wasn’t an easy decision for us.”
With this particular Battlefield, DICE tweaked with a number of features to get new players on board. Unfortunately, its state at launch left it lacking in content, which only seeped into the kind of outrage we’ve seen with the TTK debacle. That said, the devs have promised to continue listening to feedback as they roll out new game content. As they strive to make Battlefield V more enjoyable, let’s hope it’s less hit and miss and more hit.
“It’s been a challenge across our games for a long time, as many will know, and becomes even more important for us to improve upon our post-launch experience with consistent updates to the game through the Tides of War,” DICE said. “Our desire to service a game that caters to old and new players will continue. How we get it right isn’t easy, nor will it be quick, and we appreciate when the community comes together and helps us on this journey.”
The original TTK value has returned as of today, December 18 at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 1 PM CET. Meanwhile, “Core” playlists were removed. Battlefield V is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
