The Wasteland May Not Be All-Inclusive
By now you’ve heard that Sony has greenlit Fortnite cross-play. If not, read up on the news here. With the long-awaited accessibility out of the way, the floodgates have seemingly opened and folks are asking about the feature for other games. That’s the case for Fallout 76, at least, an online wasteland that looks dead yet ripe for multi-platform interactions. Well, Bethesda has delivered a response.
Despite Sony’s concession with Fortnite, Bethesda doesn’t have their finger on the trigger of cross-play accessibility. The publisher’s VP of marketing, Pete Hines, tweeted a response to the sudden demand and declared that there are currently no plans.

Well done, Sony. https://t.co/jEMPH65wbt

That’s not to say cross-play for Fallout 76 will never happen. In the past, Bethesda Softworks went out of their way to make mods available for the PlayStation 4, despite Sony’s wall of opposition. Today, Fallout 4 mods are available across all platforms, as are Fortnite servers. If the demand is high enough, there’s no ruling out a wasteland that holds PS4 and Xbox One users. We have to experience a smooth beta rollout, first, followed by the launch of the game. Afterward, we can anticipate news on cross-play and what that may look like.
I should add, however, that I don’t think Sony is suddenly open to cross-play for every online game. Fortnite may be the exception, one that resulted from fan backlash, but only time will tell where today’s events will take us. Keep it locked for updates as they come.
