Fantasy Sports Game No Longer In Development
After several months of development hiatus, Breakaway has been shelved. The fantasy sports title is no longer in the works, allowing Double Helix Games to “focus on new ideas.” The game’s shutdown was announced on the official Breakaway subreddit earlier this week.
The game was first announced during TwitchCon 2016. The official post on the matter is a bit light on concrete details, though the lack of development updates for the last several months is rather telling. Breakaway was conceived as a 4×4 sports MOBA, a sort of alternative to the usual arena battlers already thriving throughout the online gaming community. The developers were actively engaged in responding to community feedback throughout the game’s life, with ultimately unsatisfactory results.
While we have no information on why the shutdown occurred at present, there is some room (as always) for baseless speculation. Maybe Amazon Game Studios decided that the market for MOBAs was drying up in light of the recent Battle Royale explosion? After all, said genre wasn’t nearly as popular back when the game was first announced. Hopefully we get some details on this sudden development in the near future. Also, here’s to Double Helix finding success on whatever project they decide to launch next. Godspeed, Breakaway.
