Star Wars One Is Hugely Successful So Far
Just over a month after its release Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is absolutely crushing both the international and domestic box offices! As of today, this first Star Wars standalone movie has made over 1 billion dollars worldwide, making it the fourth hugely successful Disney movie of 2016.
Rogue One was released in the middle of December, and has now earned $512.2 million domestically and $1.011 billion worldwide! Rogue One has recently taken the title for the highest grossing film of 2016 domestically from the reigning champions Finding Dory with $486 million and Captain America: Civil War with $408 million. It has become the fourth Disney movie that is not only so successful but also the fourth Disney movie of 2016 to cross the 1 billion dollar threshold. The success follows that of Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory and Zootopia, each grossing over 1 billion dollars each. The Jungle Book also came so close, with $966.6 million as well.
This success at the box office is similar to Star Wars: The Force Awakens that had a fantastic box office run with $936 million domestic and $2.068 billion worldwide. It will be interesting to see just how close Rogue One will come to its predecessor. One thing is for sure, both Disney Star Wars films were the highest grossing movies of the years they were released.
As of right now, just 39 day after release, Rogue One is close to being the second-highest grossing Star Wars movie after The Force Awakens, as it’s already passed the domestic earnings of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace ($431 million) and is close to passing its international box office haul ($1.027 billion). Considering the success of both The Force Awakens and Rogue One, there is no question that there is a strong audience base for the series. Fans definitely have something to look forward to as Disney is set to release a new Star Wars movie every year from now until 2020.
