Zoom Around on Twisting Magnetic Raceways of the Future in Redout, New Original Racer Coming to Nintendo Switch
Mario Kart isn’t the only racer coming to the Nintendo Switch. Studio 34BigThings has been working hard for the past two years getting their original racer, Redout ready for launch on Switch. Redout is reminiscent of a traditional racer – no tricks or weapons, just your skills vs the competition and the tracks.
Set more than 500 years in the future, Redout will deliver familiar gameplay with a futuristic twist. The barren wasteland that once was earth has been transformed into the galaxy’s hottest racing spot. These vehicles have no wheels, they zoom around the elaborate magnetic rail systems built around reimagined iconic locations like Cairo, Alaska, or the beautiful Italian region of Abruzzo. Vehicle designs are hugely varied from some that look a bit like pod racers from Star Wars, to some really sleek-looking frames with massive thrusters attached. Check out the epic trailer below to get a feeling for the scope and pace that Redout is going for:
The control system or Redout was painstakingly developed to maximize player control and minimize frustration. It seems that the game will be playable with just a single JoyCon controller, meaning you could easily set up anywhere and challenge a friend to a furious duel of fastness. Since the racers are hovering above the track, the control stick can be used not only to turn and drift, but also to pitch your vehicle up or down. Pitching your vehicle down will increase friction on the track, slow you down, and allow you a greater deal of control for tricky turns. Pitch your vehicle up while racing up an incline to say goodbye to friction all together and nab yourself a handy speed boost.
Redout is currently planned for release in Spring 2017. Pricing and an exact release date are yet to be announced, but when it does launch, Redout will be available as both a physical disc as well as by digital download in the Nintendo Store.
