PS4 Slim & Persona 5 Sales in Japan Give Sony a Desperately Needed Boost

PS4 Slim & Persona 5 Sales a Breath of Fresh Air for Japan

Over the past few months, PS4 sales in Japan haven’t been all that great. Much of these poor sales figures are; however, a result of a shortage caused by Sony preparing to launch the new slim model. Last week the PS4 Slim console finally hit the local shelves and as expected PS4 sales are back up in Japan.

The sudden influx of PS4 Slim units has caused the numbers to bounce back up significantly, selling 96,433 units according to statistics firm Media Create. This brings the total local sales for the console to 3,217,591 units since its launch. Incidentally, Sony’s console is getting very close to overtaking the Wii U’s 3,262,598 units sold in Japan during its lifetime.

The launch of the new console wasn’t the only factor contributing to the return of high numbers for the PS4. September 15th also saw the local release of Persona 5, which debuted as the best selling game for the week on PS4 with 264,793 units, while the PS3 version followed in second place and sold 72,974 units. The total tally for Atlus’ new JRPG is 337,767 units sold.

Sony and Atlus also launched a bundle with a PS4 slim and the game, but we don’t know how many of the PS4 sales belong to that offer. Notable are also the sales of Pro Evolution Soccer 2017, with 66,037 units sold on PS4 and 34,502 on PS3.
