According to Digitimes, Nintendo’s next console, the NX, has been scheduled to begin production in the first quarter of 2016. The console will reportedly be made by Foxconn Electronics, although that company has yet to confirm this.
Although Nintendo is aiming for targeted sales of 20 million units in 2016, analysts estimate that the number sold will more likely be 10-12 million units. That will still be a major sales coup for Nintendo, whose Wii U has failed to gain traction with either consumers or game developers. In comparison, the PS4 and Xbox One are estimated to sell 18 million and 13 million units respectively in 2016. Thus, the NX, if the analysts are right, will put Nintendo back in the game for console dominance when it releases.
The Nintendo NX is shrouded in secrecy, but from what we know so far, it will be a console-handheld hybrid running on a much more powerful processor than the Wii U. Nintendo has big hopes that the new console’s greater power will help it regain the confidence of developers, who mostly stayed away from the relatively-weak Wii U.
