Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days Lets You Recruit Dogs in Its Latest Update

Dogs Join the Fight for Survival in Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days

Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days has received its 16th update, and this time, survivors won’t have to face the zombie apocalypse entirely on their own. Developer and publisher PikPok has introduced recruitable dogs alongside weapon repair mechanics, durability rebalancing, and improvements to shelter defences.

The latest update brings three dog breeds to the game: German Shepherds, Border Collies, and Golden Retrievers. Players can encounter these four-legged companions while scavenging and bring them back to their shelters, where they can feed, pet, and care for them. However, keeping a dog comes with its own responsibilities, as neglecting its needs could have fatal consequences.

Dogs also bring some unexpected changes to shelter life. Their presence can affect survivor morale, with individual personality traits determining whether someone welcomes the new companion or would rather keep their distance. They can even influence how certain shelter events unfold. Some dogs may suffer from separation anxiety and damage barricades while survivors are away, while others can scare off bandits and leave weapons behind for the group to collect.

Beyond the canine additions, Update #16 introduces weapon repair mechanics and rebalances durability, giving players more to consider when maintaining their equipment. Shelter defences have also received an overhaul, adding another layer of strategy to surviving in zombie-infested Texas.

Update #16 is available now in Steam Early Access on PC. PikPok plans to launch the full version of Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days in March 2027 for Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and GeForce NOW.

With dogs joining the fight for survival, the latest update adds a welcome bit of warmth to an otherwise brutal apocalypse. Just remember to look after your new companions.
