Take a Closer Look at Shadow of the Road
Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games have unveiled a new story trailer for Shadow of the Road, giving players a closer look at the brutal conflict shaping its alternate version of 19th-century Japan.
The trailer opens in the middle of a bloody battlefield, where soldiers from both sides clash over two very different visions for Japan. While the Shōgun represents tradition, the Emperor pushes the country toward modernization. Caught in the middle, countless soldiers lose their lives, including Master Mochitsugu, a loyal vassal of the Shōgun.
His two surviving disciples must then abandon their former lives and escape into exile. Now dishonored and hunted, the former samurai become ronin as they struggle to deal with their master’s death. Alongside a group of new companions, they must decide whether to fight the forces reshaping Japan or let history sweep them away.
Shadow of the Road presents an alternate take on the Bakumatsu Period that is full of political conflict, competing ideologies, and supernatural elements. The East Nippon Company has also supplied the Emperor’s forces with powerful mechs, putting both soldiers and civilians in danger. Meanwhile, kami and yōkai drawn from Japanese folklore pursue their own mysterious goals.
Shadow of the Road is scheduled to launch later this year, although its release date remains unannounced. A playable demo is currently available on Windows PC through Steam.
With its mix of samurai drama, supernatural mythology, and tactical combat, Shadow of the Road is shaping up to be an intriguing journey through a Japan on the brink of change.
