Wishlist Expeditions: Samurai on Steam Right Now
THQ Nordic and Campfire Cabal have shared a fresh look at the artistic direction behind Expeditions: Samurai through a new developer diary titled The Art of Expeditions: Samurai. The latest video gives fans an inside look at how the studio is recreating the atmosphere of feudal Japan while staying true to the series’ historical roots.
The team behind Expeditions: Conquistador, Expeditions: Viking, and Expeditions: Rome explains how traditional Japanese art and the country’s rich cultural heritage have heavily influenced the game’s visual style. Creative Director Jonas Wæver walks viewers through the inspiration behind the environments, characters, and overall art direction, while also highlighting the concept art that helped shape the project from its early stages.
The developer diary also showcases the game’s improved visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5. Alongside more detailed environments, players can expect expanded character customization options that allow them to create a unique samurai for their journey.
One of the biggest additions to the series is how customized characters will now appear during dialogue scenes, making conversations feel more personal than in previous Expeditions titles. Companion characters have also received a major upgrade, with dynamic facial expressions that change based on their emotions and their evolving relationship with the player.
Expeditions: Samurai is scheduled to launch in Early Access for PC this summer, giving players an early opportunity to experience Campfire Cabal’s take on historical Japan. Based on this latest developer diary, the game is shaping up to be one of the studio’s most visually ambitious projects yet.
