A Huge Success for Switch 2
Recent market figures suggest that Nintendo’s latest console is already leaving several older systems behind in the UK. The Switch 2 has now surpassed the total lifetime sales of multiple discontinued consoles, marking a strong early showing for Nintendo’s newest hardware.
The data was highlighted by industry analyst Chris Dring on X, drawing on sales information from NielsenIQ. According to these figures, the Switch 2 has overtaken the Wii U’s lifetime sales in the UK. Originally released in 2012 and discontinued in 2017, the Wii U struggled commercially throughout its lifespan. Even so, surpassing its total UK sales in around six months remains a noteworthy achievement for the Switch 2.

The same data also indicates that the Switch 2 has exceeded the lifetime UK sales of the PlayStation Vita and the Sega Dreamcast. Both systems faced difficulties during their time on the market, but the comparison still highlights the pace at which the Switch 2 has been selling since launch. In the UK alone, fewer consumers purchased those consoles across their entire lifecycles than have already bought the Switch 2 in its first half year.
Nintendo released the Switch 2 in June, and the console reportedly sold over six million units worldwide within its first two months. To support continued demand, Nintendo has asked its manufacturing partners to produce up to 25 million units by March 2026.
Looking ahead, Nintendo has planned a steady stream of notable releases for the Switch 2. Upcoming titles such as Elden Ring, the cooperative ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia, and the narrative-focused adventure Dispatch will help keep the console’s momentum strong.
