Lead Your Crew in Canvas City
Independent studio Disc 2 Games, with support from the award-winning Black Salt Games, has revealed its debut game, Canvas City. It is a story-driven, turn-based tactics RPG where players win battles through creativity and movement, rather than traditional weapons.
Set in a vibrant yet heavily controlled metropolis, Canvas City follows a crew of skaters and street artists who rise up against an oppressive regime. The game reimagines tactical combat by blending classic strategy depth with fluid movement. Rails, ramps, and vertical terrain can be used mid-turn to perform tricks and chain attacks, generating Style Points to enhance abilities. As Technical Director Kris Nicholson explains, “Movement isn’t just getting from one spot to another, it’s part of the plan.”
Breaking away from fantasy kingdoms and military campaigns, Canvas City embraces a modern urban setting shaped by art, music, and rebellion. Creative Director Johannes Otte highlights the fresh approach: “We wanted to set this apart from the tactics games people might have played before by giving the players a fresh new setting, replacing modern or fantasy armies with crews of artists, musicians, and dancers.”
Music is central to that vision. Composer David Mason notes that each crew carries its own personality, with soundscapes shifting accordingly, from heavy percussion to bright synths, ensuring that every battle feels as distinct as it looks.
Players will face off against rival districts, from corporate-backed squads to anarchic performance artists, each with unique strategies and styles. Recruiting from a diverse cast, players can build and upgrade their own crew, mastering more than 80 abilities while uncovering the truth behind the city’s cultural crackdown.
Currently in development for PC and Nintendo Switch, Canvas City is available to wishlist now on Steam in English, German, French, Japanese, and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
