Sony Is Developing a New Handheld Console for PS5 Games

Excited to See a New Handheld Console From Sony

Bloomberg reports that Sony Interactive Entertainment is in the “early stages” of working on a handheld console for PS5 games. However, it could take several years before it’s ready.

“The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development,” Bloomberg wrote.

Handheld Console

This concept could take inspiration from the PlayStation Portal, a recently released portable gaming device. It streams PS5 games through the cloud, offering players flexibility to game away from their consoles. However, it cannot run games directly on the device.

A PlayStation portable launch might enter a competitive market, going head-to-head with Nintendo’s upcoming Switch successor. It could also challenge Microsoft, which is reportedly considering its own handheld Xbox device, making this an exciting time for gaming fans.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Xbox chief Phil Spencer shared that Microsoft is working on prototypes and considering what it might do. He’s tasked the hardware team to analyze the market and “develop its vision based on what it learns”. He also adds that it will take a few years to release any new device. He shared that Xbox plans to improve its app for current portable devices while teaming up with hardware makers to ensure their products work seamlessly.
