What Is the Goal?
In order to win a game of Texas Hold’em you need to successfully use your hole cards in combination with the community cards to make the best poker hand that you can. What’s Bluffing, and What Are Hole Cards?
There’s a little terminology that it pays to know when it comes to Texas Hold’em; just like chess has its own language, so does poker. Hole cards are the cards that you’re dealt into your hand; you don’t need to show these to anybody, except right at the very end! Community cards are the ones that are dealt into the center of the table for everybody to use, and all players can see these all the time. Bluffing is when a player pretends to have a better hand than they actually do, usually by upping the bet. There are plenty of other terms that you’ll come across, but we’ll explain them in the next section.
The Order of Play
A game begins with each player being dealt two hole cards. Next, the players bet on if they think they will win or not. Over the course of the next few rounds, the players will be dealt additional cards to the middle of the table (community cards) until they each have five in total; they’ll also place more bets depending on their certainty about their cards or their bluffing ability. By this point, there should be five community cards and two hole cards.
The player with the best five-card hand that’s still in the game is the winner. Which hand is the best is determined by looking at hand rankings, which we’ll explain next. A little more language that you should be aware of includes the terms for the stages that the community cards are dealt in. The first stage, where three cards are dealt, is called the flop. The second stage where one card is dealt is called the turn, and the final stage where the final card is dealt is called the river. The only way that a game can end without a player showing their hand is if they cause every other player to fold before the end, thus winning themselves the game.
Tips For Winning
Putting yourself out there and practicing either online or in person is the best way to improve at poker. It might take a minute before you’re competing against the best poker players out there, but entering yourself into even the smallest tournament is a huge accomplishment.
In order to give yourself a head start, learning your hand rankings is a great first step to take. The highest ranking hand that you can achieve is a Royal Flush, which features all of the cards of the same suit from 10 up to Ace.
