PlayStation is Already Planning For Future Acquisitions

Acquisition Marathon?

PlayStation is signaling more acquisitions on the way as it is hiring a brand new Director of Corporate Development, to help the company identify potential acquisitions and boost its first-party studios collection.

The new job listing was reported by Video Game Chronicle’s Robert Serrano. He goes on to elaborate that the new position would be mainly responsible for leading the team that will have the objective of “Identifying inorganic growth opportunities through acquisitions, investments or joint ventures, attractive M&A and investment opportunities.”

As clearly stated in the job listing, PlayStation is not only planning on acquiring another studio or two, they are planning to have an entirely new team working full time and solely tasked with actively looking for new potential questions with the intention of growing their first-party studio line-up.

It is worth noting that Xbox had just posted a new job listing of their own, and with a similar job description. Xbox’s job posting indicates that the new employee will be “developing and evaluating the business case for content & technology acquisitions.”

The console wars seem to have now evolved into an acquisition marathon between PlayStation and Xbox. Since 2020, Xbox had acquired Bethesda and is now in the process of acquiring Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion. Sony on the other hand had acquired Bungie for $2.6 billion as well as Bluepoint and Housemarque.

It is obviously still unclear what studios PlayStation or Xbox may be eyeing for acquisition at the moment, but the acquisition spree for both companies is far from over.
