FIFA 22 Devs Remove Mason Greenwood Following Rape Allegations
FIFA 22 devs have just announced that they removed Mason Greenwood from FIFA Ultimate team packs and Ultimate Draft. This announcement came after the Manchester United footballer was the subject of accusations of rape and assault this past weekend.
“Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate Draft,” EA confirmed.
Police arrested Greenwood on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill, according to multiple sources. Manchester United has already confirmed that the athlete will no longer play for the club until further notice.
Although Greenwood will be removed from FIFA 22, any pre-existing save in Career Mode that includes him will remain. His Ultimate Team card will also remain on the trading market. At the time of removal, Greenwood’s virtual player had an overall rating of 79 out of 99 on the FIFA franchise, with a potential rating of 90 out of 99.
Greenwood’s removal from FIFA 22 does not particularly lead to anything. However, it does lead to crass market speculation. His card will now be more rare than ever. Fans can expect EA to address this by fixing the price of Ultimate Team items to prevent this.
The relationship between real world sports and their video game equivalents is now nearly total. This is a good thing considering that football fans want FIFA 22 to be impacted by what is really happening in the world of football. However, it puts EA in a spot where they have to make judgments regarding some serious accusations such as with what happened to Greenwood as they happen.
There is precedent for FIFA 22 devs removing players in this manner. After all, they also gotten rid of Benjamin Mendy from the game amidst court charges for sexual assault and rape.
