Call of Duty Devs Want to Create Iconic Characters for Vanguard 2 & 3
Call of Duty: Vanguard may have two sequels heading its way—that is, if these two game writers get their way. Sam Maggs, the Contractor of Sledgehammer Games, shared her hopes for Vanguard’s characters being dubbed as the franchise’s mascots during a New York Comic Con panel.
“How do we make the iconic CoD characters?” said Maggs. “You do not really have that in Call of Duty right now.” She then compares the franchise to another popular one of similar caliber. “You know, when you think about a game like Halo, you think of Master Chief,” she added. “But, when you think of CoD, there really is not a standout character.”
Maggs and fellow Call of Duty: Vanguard writer and panelist Tochi Onyebuchi, agree that the Call of Duty franchise needs flagship characters. “We want to make Vanguard 2 and Vanguard 3,” Maggs continued. “We have two more stories that we rally want to tell with these characters.”
Onyebuchi then pipes in and tells the audience that the information they were sharing was only revealed at NYCC. “That info, by the way, is a Comic Con exclusive,” Onyebuchi confirmed. “We have never said that publicly before.”
The back story of Call of Duty: Vanguard features five heroes, including playable characters Lucas Riggs, Wade Jackson, Polina Petrova, and Arthur Kingsley. Together, they form an international squad with a mission of eliminating the threat of the Axis powers towards the end of World War 2.
Maggs is hopeful that the Call of Duty community will love these characters, as the devs seem to want them to represent the series. “We are hoping that if people love them as much as we do, that we get to continue to tell the story of these people,” she added. “Make them sort of like figureheads for this era of CoD, basically.”
