Naraka: Bladepoint Takes Battle Royale to Feudal Japan

Nioh Meets Fortnite

Everything comes full circle eventually. The term “battle royale” saw an uptick in use since the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale came out. As you can guess, Battle Royale was about a group of people who had to kill each other and the last one standing was the winner, who got to survive. Today, the most common use of “battle royale” used to describe a genre for a game like Fortnite. Recently, 24 Entertainment has showed off their upcoming battle royale game Naraka: Bladepoint, which is set in Feudal-era Japan. Bam. Rattle Royale returns to Japan. Full circle.

Naraka: Bladepoint

Some great gameplay was shown at the Future Games Show, Naraka: Bladepoint looks a lot like Nioh, from a design aspect. You have Ninja and Samurai characters running around and zipping up and across the terrain. Like other battle royales, you can find a vantage point, plan your attack, and strike at the perfect opportunity. We see a lot of really interesting mechanics to Naraka: Bladepoint. Players can use an ability that transforms them into Vajra Warriors, which are basically really big, four-armed Goro-like beasts. As a Vajra Warrior, you can take on multiple human enemies or go head to head with another player in their Vajra form.

The gameplay trailer jumps around from player to player, giving us different looks at the game. The combat is mostly hand-to-hand, but players can also use bows and other ranged attacks. First strikes and combos look really important since they can easily stagger opponents prevent them from fighting back. You can turn the tide by parrying incoming strikes though. A really important traversal tool appears to be a grappling hook for pulling yourself around the area and between vantage points. 24 Entertainment is planning a beta for the game from April 23rd to 25th. Naraka: Bladepoint is expected to come out in the Summer for PC.
