PvE? In My Overwatch? It’s More Likely Than You Think
Blizzard is on a roll today. We just finished telling you about the facelifts some characters are getting in Overwatch 2, and it’s already time to start filling you all in on the nitty-gritty of Hero Missions. Jeff Kaplan, the head of the development team, and a few other team members got together and share their progress on Overwatch 2 in a video that reached just shy of forty minutes, which means we have a lot of info to share. Let’s start by explaining what, exactly, Hero Missions mode is and what we can expect from it.
In short, Hero Missions is planned to be a PvE mode in which players can team up with their friends to battle waves of AI-controlled enemies. The result will be a much longer campaign than the usual PvP modes offer, giving you a chance to explore the entire map before you reach the end of the mission. The developers are planning to bring hundreds of potential missions, all of which will feature multiple, distinct objectives. In other words, we finally get to feel like the futuristic superheroes and supervillains we’re playing as! Sounds like fun to us.
Every map in the Overwatch series will get a Hero Missions mode which features different types of enemies. In some cases, that means locations in the game will receive new, extended areas to make sure the scale of the maps matches the requirements of the new mode. Plus, Hero Mode will dynamic weather and a day/night cycle to make navigating the terrain more interesting. In Hero Missions, you’ll be able to level up and upgrade your favorite characters, and you know what that means: grinding. If we’re lucky, the devs will have a plan to avoid that outcome, but if not, prepare to embrace the grind.
Overwatch 2 is expected to launch in 2022.
