Sephiroth and Other FFVII Characters Come to Smash Next Week

Estuans Interius Ira Vehementi Sephiroth

The big news in Super Smash Bros Ultimate this past couple of weeks has been Sephiroth. He’s one of the most identifiable villains and one of the most popular characters in the Final Fantasy series. We’ll get to that, but there is some other cool stuff coming to Smash alongside him. A bunch of Mii character outfits in Round 8 may be familiar to you. We see a Barret costume as a Gunner, Tifa as a Brawler, Aerith as a Swordfighter, a Chocobo as a Hat, and Geno as a Gunner as well.

Sephiroth

On to the main event. Mr. Sakurai gives us the rundown on Sephiroth. He also notes, as many Final Fantasy fans did, how similar the reveal trailer was to Sephiroth’s appearance in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. He appears in his regular long-coat and in a shirtless version, because he’s a thirst-trap. When he is in danger, his one wing sprouts, giving him a bunch of bonuses. That’s right; he has a second phase! The winged mode gives him an extra mid-air jump, speed and strength boosts, and his smash attacks have super armor, so they do not get interrupted. He still takes damage though. His “danger” zone is dependent on the state of the battle. If Sephiroth is down by a couple of lives, his wing appears after taking less damage; if he is up by a couple of lives, it takes more damage before the wing appears.

One of Sephiroth’s most distinctive features is Masamune, his sword. It is about 9 feet long, so its range is pretty incredible. Though not all his attacks involve Masamune, the ones that do have a really wide range. Damage dealt by Masamune is dependent on where it makes contact. Enemies struck by the tip take more damage than one struck closer to the hilt.

The Northern Cave stage is being added to Smash alongside Sephiroth. The stage itself floats through the Northern Cave and if you just watch the background, you will see Holy emerge from the Northern Cave and confront Meteor. The Lifestream also protects the planet. Spoiler alert. Sephiroth will be playable on December 22nd. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
