Project Athia Could Come to Other Consoles… Two Years Later

If You’re Getting an Xbox Series X, Prepare For a Long Wait

Project Athia is a game that has a lot of people excited, but it’s important to keep in mind that we don’t actually know all that much about the upcoming Square Enix game. We know that it’s an open-world Action RPG that features the protagonist being drawn into a fantasy world and… that’s about it. We know that the game’s environments will be rendered in real-time, leading to some of the clearest visuals in history. We know that the game is a PlayStation exclusive – but thanks to a new trailer, it looks like that exclusivity might have a big asterisk next to it.

The new trailer showcases some of the PS5’s new and upcoming games, giving us glimpses of other upcoming games like Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo. In the case of Project Athia there’s little we haven’t seen before, but the fine print at the bottom of the segment (around the 33 second mark) states that the game is available for PC, but won’t be coming to other consoles for at least 24 months after release.

This is bound to be good news for Xbox players who’re big fans of Square Enix titles, as the company has been focusing more on the PS5 in recent years, and will continue to do so with Final Fantasy XVI’s timed exclusivity – in fact, some suspect that Sony could buy the company outright to counter Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda – definitely a big get, given that Square Enix is among the biggest developers of Eastern RPG’s compared to Bethesda’s dominance in the Western RPG market. This also opens up avenues for newer consoles and services, like the Google Stadia or Amazon Luna, who each want to make their own mark on the gaming world.
