Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition Replaces Original on All Storefronts

The Original Game Can No Longer Be Purchased After Definitive Edition’s Release

Dragon Quest XI originally released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, and PC. A definitive edition of the game released under the title Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch in September of 2019. The definitive edition added new content including a new 2D mode, new quests, items, weapons, soundtracks, and more. It is a title worthy of being called the “definitive version” of the game.

Now, a little over a year later Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One for the very first time. While I’m sure most fans of the game or players experiencing Dragon Quest XI for the first time would prefer the additional content, it is a bit of a disappointment that they no longer have the choice to play the original version as it has been removed from all storefronts in favor of the new and improvement, definitive edition.

Some fans may consider the definitive edition a slight downgrade as it is a port of the Nintendo Switch version, which while it does have a variety of new content, is a bit of a graphical downgrade from the original PC/PS4 release of the game.

The removal of the original game of course has no effect on Nintendo Switch or Xbox One players as the original game never released on these consoles to begin with, but for PS4 and Steam users, the original game has been completely removed from the respective storefronts now that the definitive edition has released.

Bear in mind if you already own the original version of the game, you can still play it. While some fans may be saddened to hear about the loss of the option to purchase the original version, there is plenty to look forward to in the definitive version. Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass for PC users can also start playing the game immediately as the definitive edition is now available as a part of your subscription.

You can still access the original game’s steam page using the proper link, but you will be disappointed as it will prompt you to buy the definitive edition and leave you with this messages:

Notice: At the request of the publisher, DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Ageâ„¢ – Digital Edition of Light is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.”

Notice: This version of DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Ageâ„¢ – Digital Edition of Light is no longer available.
Please see the new DRAGON QUEST® XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Ageâ„¢ – Definitive Edition.”

What do you think? Are you annoyed by the removal of the original game? Does it not really bother you since the definitive edition has more content anyway? Let us know what you think in the comments, on Twitter, or on our Facebook page.
