The Last of Us 2 released only a few days ago but it has already ruffled a lot of feathers. Judging from what has been seen online, it would appear that a large portion of the community is very upset with the direction that Naughty Dog has taken their beloved series from a narrative standpoint. The gameplay and graphics are objectively outstanding but unfortunately, that has not stopped enraged fans from stepping away from The Last of Us 2 feeling disappointed.
A petition has started online begging Naughty Dog to somehow rewrite the story for The Last of Us 2. While this is almost certainly a vain attempt to try and change something that cannot be altered, it does go to show how displeased some of the community is about various aspects of the story. As anyone who has finished The Last of Us 2 or saw the leaks beforehand will guess the major gripe fans have with The Last of Us 2 is the killing off of Joel.
The petition reads, “they killed off our favorite character and forced us to use the character that killed off Joel and we were supposed to connect to abbey [sic] throughout half of the game, and the main character isn’t even Ellie, we want ND to remake the game with the scenes they provided at every trailer with Joel and not model swap him from flashbacks. (The Last of Us 2 ) was a massive disrespect for every fan that waited 7 years for this sequel, and we need to get what we deserved and it was not this game.” At the time of writing this article, the petition has more than 12,000 unique signatures.
Other petitions like this have been attempted in the past. Similar outrage was on full display after the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie as well as the final season of Game of Thrones. While both had various levels of success there is virtually no chance that Naughty Dog is going to release an alternate version of The Last of Us 2 where Joel isn’t beaten to death with a golf club. Right now The Last of Us 2 has a measly user score of 4.4 on Metacritic and a 45% approval rating according to Google.
