Didn’t Make the Cut
Fans of the original Final Fantasy VII game know all the playable characters; Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Red XIII, Cid, and the optional party members Vincent and Yuffie. It was a bit of a disappointment when we heard that Red XIII would not be playable in Final Fantasy VII Remake, but it kind of makes sense, since he really only appears at the tail end of the game. However, as he was playable in the original right from the moment he was introduced, that was apparently also the plan for the Remake, even late into development.
Using a save editor program by Xeeynamo, players have found a way to play as Red XIII. In the short clip below, it shows Red XIII in full action. The canine’s combat seems to be fully animated, so the choice to not include him as playable might have been super late. Xeeynamo’s save editor was originally meant for Kingdom Hearts games, but has been updated for Final Fantasy VII Remake support.

Because Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first of many parts of the original game, you can bet that Red XIII will be playable in the installments going forward. Final Fantasy VII Remake is available now exclusively for PS4.
