“Odin Is With Us!”
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is finally upon us. After more than a year of rumors and speculation, Ubisoft has released a cinematic trailer for the game. Though the trailer does not really reveal which rumors have been true, it is still exciting. Normally, when we think of vikings, we imagine barbaric, murderous brutes, and that is the way they are described by the English. However, in the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla trailer, they are a proud and faithful people with as much to fight for and protect as anyone.
The trailer starts with narration from an Englishman, likely a Templar. He describes the vikings as savages, but his words are juxtaposed by the imagery we see. The English plan to declare war on the vikings. On the battlefield, the vikings fight the English with great ferocity, often taking multiple blows before going down. We see the main character Eivor (AYY-vor) as a male, though Eivor can be a female if the player chooses. In the midst of battle, Eivor sees a hooded man under a tree before disappearing. Overhead a raven flies by. This signifies that Odin is watching. Eivor goes one-on-one with a particularly large English soldier. Despite being out muscled by the soldier, Eivor kills him, revealing his hidden blade.
So, that’s cool. Eivor’s hidden blade comes out of his outer wrist. One of the rumors of the game have been that there will be multiple islands to be visited, thus giving it the codename Kingdoms. That appears to be true, given the conflict between the vikings and the English in the trailer. We just have to wait a little while before learning everything else. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be coming out during the holiday season of 2020 for PC, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
