Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition Gets Removed From Steam

Bundles are great. Game of the Year Editions, Complete Editions, Remasters, Anniversary Editions; they are all about giving everything that game has to offer. They are often sold for less than the sum of their parts, but are totally worth it. What is not great is when those things become delisted or are no longer available for purchase. The latest case of that would be Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition. This is the definitive edition of Mortal Kombat (2011) or Mortal Kombat 9. For some reason, this game was removed from Steam recently “at the request of the publisher”.

Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition

There is a guess as to why it has disappeared. At the time of Mortal Kombat 9’s release, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive’s parent company Warner Bros. Entertainment had the rights to Freddy Krueger, who appeared in the game as a guest fighter. In 2019, the license to Freddy Krueger has returned to the estate of his creator Wes Craven. It is certainly possible that Warner Bros. did not renew the license and had to stop selling any content with Freddy Krueger in it, including the Komplete Edition.

Since Krueger is a DLC character, it is still possible to sell the game in its base form, without DLC. They would have to omit his DLC pack, but at least it would still be on the market. The game was delisted from Steam just recently, so we may yet see Warner Bros. come up with an alternative package for the game without Freddy Krueger. The Freddy theory is just speculation at this point, but a plausible one. Mortal Kombat (2011) is available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
