The Results May Surprise You
Japan’s national broadcasting network, NHK, organized a survey recently. It is a subject that is as brave as it is controversial: the favourite Final Fantasy games. It’s like picking which of your children you like best. Of course, you have an answer, but you don’t want to make the others feel bad. Yesterday, NHK released the results. You might want to sit down for this. The winner was not Final Fantasy VII. Blasphamy! According to the results, Japan’s favourite Final Fantasy is actually Final Fantasy X. Other categories included favourite Final Fantasy character, songs, and bosses/summons.
Final Fantasy VII actually takes second place for favourites. The top two make a lot of sense. Final Fantasy VII really put the series on the map, especially in the West. The graphics and storytelling of the game were at the center of its greatness. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy X was the first in the series to have voice acting and had reached a new level of overall quality and accessibility. They are both also some of the only numbered games to have follow-ups in the forms of other games, movies, and novels.
What is not so surprising is Japan’s favourite Final Fantasy character, Cloud Strife. The brooding, mysterious, big-sword-swinging, spiky-haired, motorcycle-riding, badass. He is followed up by Final Fantasy X’s Yuna, then Aerith Gainsborough. Their favourite summon/boss is Final Fantasy VII’s Knights of the Round. The favourite music track is To Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X.
