Opposites Attract
It is safe to say that if there is one Venn diagram that represents the gaming community it is the Doom/Animal Crossing Venn diagram. There are Doom fans, Animal Crossing fans, and fans of both. The new games from both franchises have become an odd pair; they could not be more different gameplay-wise, but they share the same release date. Because of this, these games have bonded in support rather than compete with each other. Fans have taken notice and began creating Doom Eternal Animal Crossing crossover art, to which Animal Crossing devs have responded.
The love between the two games goes back at least as far as December. The official Noclip Twitter account tweeted out a question of “What 2020 game would you like a doc on?” with pictures of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, and The Last of Us Part II. The Doom account retweeted, “Animal Crossing”. In February, Nintendo of America tweeted that there would be an Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Direct, to which Doom retweeted, “will Isabelle be there”. These kind of interactions have sparked crossover fan art to pop up all over the internet.
There are examples that range from Doomguy teaching Isabelle to shoot, to the two just hanging out, to the game covers swapping artistic styles. IGN compiled the best of the best. Animal Crossing’s director Aya Kyogoku has said, “I definitely do notice and have noticed that there’s a lot of Doom and Animal Crossing collaboration art and illustrations that are being posted, and as I look through them I’m in awe of how much creativity our fans have […] we’re very thankful and very thrilled to see all this. We’re so excited at the same time to see how the two are coming together to celebrate this day.” Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be available exclusively on Nintendo Switch and Doom Eternal will be available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Stadia, and Nintendo Switch. Both will be released on March 20th.
