The First Detail of Call of Duty 2020 Keeps the Game More “Grounded”

The Future? Like with Jetpacks and Stuff?

We are still having a blast with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but some people are trying to look ahead to the next Call of Duty game. As you may know, the Call of Duty games usually follow a 3-developer cycle consisting mainly of Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games. Black Ops 4 was done by Treyarch, Modern Warfare was done by Infinity Ward, so Call of Duty 2020 would be by Sledgehammer Games. Unfortunately, they are running into some problems, so Treyarch is stepping in to support them. Treyarch developer David Vonderhaar was asked about the upcoming game, which prompted a funny and relieving answer.

Call of Duty 2020

There were a few years in the mid 2010s where CoD when kind of went wild with the crazy tech and sci-fi aspects of their games. It appeared to go off the deep end when they began to regularly introduce jetpacks to the game mechanics. They appeared in Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3, Infinite Warfare, so with Call of Duty 2020’s setting and concept a mystery, a fan asked Vonderhaar about the presence of jetpacks in the next game. He said no, and it sounded like a pretty aggressive no.

While jetpacks and lasers might be the flagship elements of “the future”, this is no indication of Call of Duty 2020’s setting. It could be set in the modern era, or the past like Sledgehammer’s last CoD game, or it could just be a future without jetpacks. We usually get the first look at a new Call of Duty game in May, so stay tuned then. Call of Duty 2020 will come out, well… in 2020.
