Escape From Tarkov is a highly detailed and hardcore military shooter that was originally launched in 2016. Despite being released almost four years ago the game has seen a massive spike in popularity thanks to popular Twitch streamers and YouTube stars. The amount of new players that have joined in on the fun is staggering. However, this newfound success has come with a little bit of controversy as some players have noticed that there are no women in the game.
Battlestate Games, the developers of the Tarkov ran into this question previously when the game first launched. They said that the reason there were no playable female characters is due to lore and technical issues. This question was originally handled in a way that got the devs in a lot of trouble as one of their employees said that “women can’t handle that amount of stress” and that Tarkov was a place exclusively for “hardened men.”
Battlestate Game immediately tried to save face and quickly apologized on Twitter. The studio said that is would have been too much of a hassle to create new character models and create new animations. Being a smaller studio, they wanted to conserve resources and only focus on the males this time around. While this did not feel like a satisfactory answer to those who were offended by the previous comments, most people did not care and bought and enjoyed the game regardless.
Escape From Tarkov offers a very hardcore and unique take on the battle royale genre, There are no winners at the end of the match, only those who survive. It is simply the player’s job to get into an area, loot it, and get out without being killed. Something that is much easier said than done.
