Lagging IRL
I was going to open with a “please, take a number” joke, but the Nintendo Tokyo store is so busy, that’s actually what they’re doing! We first learned of this store in February, before it opened in November. It was always bound to be popular, but we didn’t think it would be “fire hazard” popular. The Twitter account for the store tweeted out that customers would be giving a number ordering who would get to enter the store first. After the numbers are depleted, a regular line-up would be made. That was on December 9th.
Since then, the account has also functioned as an estimation for wait times. Yesterday, the account estimated today’s wait time to be about 150 minutes. That is a long-ass time to get into a store, but sounds a bit better than 2 and a half hours. That’s the length of a movie. Maybe the whole reason that Nintendo developed the Switch was so that customers would have something to do while in line to buy their products.
There are about 1,000 different products in this store, and 500 of them are exclusive to the physical store. In the mall where I live, there was a small Nintendo kiosk set up for the holidays where there were a few Nintendo Switches that kids could play, and some plushies and hats to buy. There were usually 15-20 people around it at any given time. I bought a Legend of Zelda beanie in about 2 minutes. Imagine how many people it would take to create a 2 and a half hour line-up!
What product would you line-up for 2 hours for? Let us know in the comments below.
