CDPR Says First-Person Focus Is the Right Choice for Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077’s First-Person Focus Is the Right Choice for the Game According to CDPR

Unlike the cutscenes within The Witcher 3, earlier this month CD Projekt Red revealed that the cutscenes and view of Cyberpunk 2077 would be completely first-person. Although players will still be able to view their character within the game’s inventory screen, in mirrors, and during driving sequences, this recent revelation has been received negatively by some fans. At the recent Tokyo Game Show, CDPR responded to the criticism.

In an interview with VGC at the Tokyo Game Show on Thursday Max Pears, level designer for Cyberpunk 2077, says that he hopes those who are upset by their decision will understand it once they get their hands on the game. “I hope people understand that we have thought about this and there is logic to our process. We’ve not just thrown this in randomly: there is a lot of thought that’s gone into it.” He continued, using an example from one of their demos, “In last year’s demo you saw the interactive dialogue system, where somebody pulled a gun on your face. I don’t think you would necessarily get that same impact in third-person.”

In fact, this first-person in-game view will likely result in a more immersive experience overall. After all, Pears says, “It’s moments like that which make it feel like it’s your story and your character.” And while he understands where some of the fans are coming from, Max Pears is adamant they’ve made the right decision for Cyberpunk 2077.There are clearly some people who are really strong and passionate [about this issue], but we believe that this is the right choice for this game.”
