He Who Spawned Spawn
San Diego Comic Con is where movies, comic books, video games, and all sorts of mediums share the same roof. There are already so many of those things crossing over, no doubt people have something to say about that. Todd McFarlane, father of the Spawn comics, attended and talked about his character’s inclusion in the Mortal Kombat series. While the Mortal Kombat 11 Spawn DLC, along with Nightwolf and Sindel, has yet to come out, we all know they are on their way and we cannot wait. Spawn, the champion of violent comic book heroes, and Mortal Kombat, champion of violent fighting games, together for the first time.
Apparently, it was not as simple as just asking McFarlane to include Spawn in MK. Todd McFarlane had a request: to make non-Spawn fans love Spawn. He wanted NetherRealm Studios to capture what he is all about. While Mortal Kombat is all about the bone-breaking, blood-spilling violence, McFarlane was actually worried that NetherRealm might not take it far enough for Spawn. Way back in 2002, Spawn was a guest character in the Xbox version of Soulcalibur II. The Soulcalibur series is nowhere near as violent as Mortal Kombat, so perhaps McFarlane’s worries about Spawn portrayal in a video game are justified.
Evidently, Todd McFarlane was convinced that Spawn was in good hands. There was good dialogue between him and NetherRealm regarding Spawn’s lines, abilities, and finishers. Still, we have not even seen any images of him like we have for Nightwolf or Sindel, but if Todd McFarlane is happy with it, then we have nothing to worry about.
