It’s not just a Cheech & Chong: The Video Game
Marijuana and marijuana users in media have often been depicted as hippies, stoners, or addicts. They have been used as a punchline or a parody of real life. Devolver Digital aims to change that. Rather than just being a “weed game”, Weedcraft Inc is more like a business simulator. It is more than just haggling with stoners and college students. With marijuana use transitioning from illegal to legal in many places, the player has to navigate the landscape of the law in building a marijuana empire.
The player controls two brothers who begin a pot business soon after the death of their father. They go from growing in their basement to striving for a monopoly on weed in their city and beyond. There is a top-down resource management-esque element to the game, but it is much more involved than that. The player must manage not just the cost of their product, but also budgetary concerns like electricity for your business, a front to distract unwanted attention, etc.. There is also a conversation and persuasion component. Bribing cops and negotiating with rivals and suppliers can be a make or break situation for your business.
The gameplay style is not as linear as you might think. There are decisions players can make that influence a sort of alignment for your business. You can play either legally or illegally, and shady or decent. Different actions and missions players take will impact whether they deal legally decent, illegally decent, legally shady, or illegally shady. Weedcraft Inc is set to release in 2019 on Steam. It is developed by Vile Monarch and published by Devolver Digital. No word on console or mobile release, but we’ll keep our ears open.
