MetaCritic Releases Game Publisher Rankings

Who Came Out On Top?

For the ninth year in a row, MetaCritic has crunched the data to give us their best and worst publisher rankings for 2018. This information is based solely on critic reviews and excludes mobile games. The factors include the average metacritic score, percentage of games with a score of 75 or above, percentage of games with a score of 49 or below, and finally, how many games were reviewed with a score of 90 as more (a minimum of 7 games needed to be met for this) So, with that said, who was number one in 2018?

That’s right – Capcom took the first place slot in 2018, up from number 5 the previous year. Monster Hunter: World highly contributed to this win, and became Capcom’s top selling game of all time. What’s interesting is that 2018 consisted of a lot of remakes or compilation games, and they didn’t add any new IPs last year.
Best Overall: Monster Hunter World (XB1)
Best New IP: N/A
Worst Overall: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 (Switch)
Fan Favourite Game: Okami HD (Switch)
.

In Second place we see Sega, maintaining their spot from last year. in 2018 they acquired Atlus, who’s titles were included in their overall score. According to Metacritic, Sega published the second most number of unique titles in 2018,behind one other publisher.
Best Overall: Sonic Mania Plus (Switch)
Best New IP:  Two Point Hospital (PC)
Worst Overall: Shining Resonance Refrain (PS4)
Fan Favourite Game: Sonic Mania Plus (Switch)

And finally, to round out the top three, EA Games, who didn’t make it to the major publishers list last year due to a low output of titles. They returned in 2018 as bigger and better and published a significant amount of new IPs as well as its EA Originals banner for indie developers.
Best Overall: FIFA 19 (PS4)
Best New IP: A Way Out (XB1)
Worst Overall: Fe (XB1)
Fan Favourite Game: A Way Out (XB1)

That covers the top 3 list -you can check out the rest of the list as well as more in depth breakdowns at the source link below. Personally, I’m happy to see Capcom on top, although I would have liked it to be thanks to Mega Man 11 existing! Of course, you can take these publisher rankings with a grain of salt – not everyone is going to agree about who belongs on top and I’m sure if fan reviews were included we’d probably be looking at a much different list!
