Please Let The PS5 Use Cartridges….
The gaming industry has been moving towards the digital marketplace for some time now. More and more games aren’t getting physical releases, and Microsoft has already got plans for a disc-less version of the Xbox One. Marc-André Jutras, Hellpoint developer and technical director of Cradle Games, believes in a different future for gaming.
According to Jutras, “Not everyone can afford to download a game and its patches, there are still internet providers who have bandwidth caps.” This means that an entirely disc-less console generation still doesn’t make sense, at least not for people who live with poor internet service. Sure, you might have a beautiful connection, but that’s not the case for everybody. Plus, what the hell will Gamestop sell if everyone goes disc-less? Aside from socks and Funko figurines.
No, there’s a different solution. Jutras believes that “some games should be able to be offered on cartridges or USB keys.” After all, that would drastically cut down on both loading times and development efforts. If Nintendo can make it work with the Switch, that means it’s possible, right? Personally, I would love a console that uses custom USB keys to load and operate games. Think of all the wacky/awesome shapes and designs you could cook up! Swords, mascots, actual car keys, crystals. The possibilities are endless!
