Ken & Incineroar Revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

New Characters Confirmed for Smash Ultimate!

Ken from the Street Fighter series and the Pokémon Incineroar were revealed as playable characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during an official Nintendo stream hosted on Thursday.

Ken is an Echo Fighter of his Street Fighter rival Ryu and he has two “final smashes” or special moves. Meanwhile, Incineroar is described as a fighter who uses “pro-wrestler” moves. Both characters join a roster that has 74 characters in total.

Additionally, the Piranha Plant character from Super Mario will be a fighter and is currently available as a free, limited-time offer for those who pre-order the game. However, it possibly won’t be playable until February 2019.

The stream also revealed the rest of all 59 assist trophy characters. Here’s a list:

  • Yuri Kozukata (Fatal Frame)
  • Isaac (Golden Sun)
  • Black Knight (Fire Emblem)
  • Thwomp (Super Mario series)
  • Spring Man (ARMS)
  • Wily Capsule (Mega Man series)
  • Flies & Hand (Mario Paint)
  • Tiki (Fire Emblem)
  • Vince (Art Academy series)
  • Guile (Street Fighter series)
  • Akira (Virtua Fighter series)

Details were also given for the game’s “Spirit System” which involves using characters from various game series to power up the main roster of fighters. Each fighter can be equipped with a primary spirit which itself can be assigned with support spirits.

In order to obtain spirits, players must win spirit battles and some spirits can fill up a character’s Smash meters faster than others.

“The spirit system lets you simulate battles between characters from more series than ever before,” Smash series director Masahiro Sakurai said during the stream. “You can enjoy many unbelievable combinations & situations.”

Sakurai also revealed that there will be paid, post-launch DLC that’ll come in the form of five packs which each have 1 fighter, 1 stage, and several music tracks. Each pack will cost $5.99 individually and the game’s “Fighters Pass” will cost $24.99. According to Sakurai, all the DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might not be completed until sometime next year.
